England international and former Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney has signed for his boyhood club, Everton.

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has joined Everton over the weekend on a free transfer. The announcement was made on Everton’s Twitter handle with photos.

According to BBC Sport, Rooney arrived at Everton’s Finch Park training ground on Saturday to have a medical, according to BBC Merseyside Sport.

Rooney, 31, has now returned to Goodison – 13 years after he left for United – despite interest from other clubs. United will waive a fee and may also fund part of Rooney’s £13m wages, it was learnt.

The deal is not connected to United’s ongoing pursuit of Everton forward Romelu Lukaku. Rooney signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract during the 2013-14 campaign, which included the option of a further season, but the Old Trafford club have no intention of triggering that clause.

The future of the the former England captain, who started 15 Premier League games last season, was a subject of speculation for several months.

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) network centre on Ahmadu Bello way in Victoria Island, Lagos, has been shut owing to the flood which accrued from the rainfall of the early hours of Saturday.

Major streets in the neighbourhoods of Victoria Island (VI) and Lekki were overtaken by flowing waters.

This left many people trapped in their homes, while vehicles found it difficult to move.

When TheCable visited the VI office of the largest television network in Africa on Saturday evening, it noticed that there were no activities.

An official of the station, who spoke off the record, said the office would remain shut till Monday.

“Our office has been shut because of the flood. Although the water has gone down now, the management has decided that for safety reasons, activities should be suspended until Monday,” he told the cable.

Two passengers of Young Shall Grow Motors were reportedly killed by armed robbers during a robbery operation along the Benin-Ore road on Friday, July 7.

It was gathered that a driver with Ezewanta Transport Service and his conductor were also shot and injured by the robbers.

Luxurious bus drivers barricaded the road at the Okada axis of the Benin- Ore road over the killing. Road users were stranded for several hours. 

A driver with Complete Sport newspaper, Sulaman Tajudeen, said the drivers blocked the road in protest against the killing during a robbery operation on the road.

According to him, the armed robbers blocked the road at about 1pm and were there till 3am, disposing passengers of their belongings.

However, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Nkombe, said one person was killed in the robbery.

“A bus conductor was killed when the robbers shot a bus which refused to stop for them,” he said.

The world's largest animals are Blue whales, they weigh up to 137,000kg but many find it had to believe that they have massive hearts.

Researchers in Toronto, Canada have preserved a huge, 200kg blue whale heart that was retrieved from a carcass in Newfoundland in 2014.

The gigantic heart which has the same size as a smart car, pumps up to 220 liters of blood per minute has been placed on display at the Royal Ontario Museum.

According to the researchers, they are preserving it through a process of plastination, which involves soaking it in acetone to remove all the water.

The researchers also pumped it with formaldehyde, which stops decay by stiffening the hearts muscles. They then drained it of acetone and placed it in a vacuum for over four months.

One of the researchers, Jacqueline Miller, said the preserved heart could last up to 1,000 years.

World's Oldest Living Male Twins Turns 104

According to the Guinness World Records, Pierre and Paul Langerock of Belgium who currently hold the record for oldest living male twins turned 104 on Saturday. The brothers have lived together most of their lives and both made a living as court magistrates.

They currently still share a room at a nursing room just outside of the Belgian city of Ghent.They both remained unmarried throughout their lives "because they always disapproved of each other?s potential partners".

They have less than two years to go before they can clinch the world record for the oldest male twins. Glen and Dale Moyer, of the U.S., currently hold the record, who each were alive for at least 105 years before Glen passed away.

The overall world record for oldest twins ever is held by sisters Kin Narita and Gin Kanie, of Japan, who each lived to be at least 107 before kin's death in 2000.

A newlywed Nigerian woman, 45 year old Uloma Curry-Walker, who was accused of soliciting her firefighter husband's murder in order to collect $100,000 in insurance money has been convicted of aggravated murder. As God will have it, she wasted her husband's life for nothing because his ex-wife was still the beneficiary of his Insurance policy.

Uloma could receive life in prison without parole for the November 2013 murder of her late William Walker, whom she had married just four months prior.

Jurors deliberated for less than two hours before coming back with the verdict Friday,

Prosecutors said Uloma was way over her head after running up tens of thousands of dollars in debt when she asked her then-17-year-old daughter and her daughter's boyfriend to find someone to kill her husband so she could collect the insurance money.

According to court testimony, Uloma gave the boyfriend, Chad Padgett, a $1,000 down payment to carry out the murder. Padgett then contacted his cousin Chris Hein, who initially failed in his attempt to kill Walker. Hein then turned to Ryan Dorty to carry out the murder.

Prosecutors said Dorty ambushed Walker and shot him four times as he returned home from getting fast food that Uloma had ordered.

She and her husband were packing the night he was killed for a move to a house they had purchased outside Cleveland.

The daughter, Padgett, Hein and Dorty testified against Uloma at trial as part of plea deal for their roles in the murder conspiracy. Hein agreed to a sentence of 18 years to life; Padgett 28 years to life; and Dorty 23 years to life. Prosecutors agreed not to seek adult charges against Uloma's 17 year old daughter due to her age. They only sentenced her to a month in a juvenile detention center.

The daughter testified at trial that her mother told her:

'No one would believe I would hire a bunch of kids to kill someone when I know people that could.' Uloma wrote a confession the day she surrendered to police that said she killed her husband because he was abusive.

But a police investigation found that Uloma's plan to collect the Insurance money was futile because her late husband had not yet changed the beneficiary on the insurance policy from his ex-wife's name to Uloma's when he was killed, so it was the ex-wife who received the money, she so desperately wanted.

Sentencing for Uloma is scheduled for Aug. 8.

Evans not missing from police custody- Spokesman

Says kidnapper kingpin has been moved to Abuja

The Nigeria police on Saturday denied media reports that suspected billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a) Evans had disappeared from police custody.

The police further disclosed that Evans had been moved from Lagos to Abuja in order to ensure uninterrupted investigation of his involvement in high profile criminal cases.

One of the national newspapers had claimed in its Saturday’s front page that Evans had varnished from police’s custody.

The newspaper further caused a stir when it claimed that Evans might have escaped or died on the grounds that the kidnap kingpin could not be located during a visit it made to the Lagos State police command headquarters in Lagos.

But the police spokesman, Mr Jimoh Moshood, has debunked the report, saying that the story was false.

Moshood, who is also a Superintendent of Police, said, “Evans is intact in police custody. He did not vanish anywhere”.

The police had arrested Evans in Lagos on June 10, while he had led officers to different locations he used for his criminal activities.

A source close to the police also stated that the decision to relocate Evans from Lagos to Abuja was put an end to the frivolous media coverage of his stay in custody which is hindering proper interrogation.

Confirming the movement of Evans to Abuja , Moshood said,” Yes, we moved Evans from Lagos to Abuja this week. The development is to allow us to properly interrogate him.

“But the media report that he had somehow disappeared from custody or that police were not willing to give updates about his whereabouts is simply absurd.”

Chibok schoolgirls read letter to Trump – White House

New York – Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu, two of the Chibok schoolgirls, who escaped from Boko Haram captivity in 2014, read a letter applauding U.S. President Donald Trump during a recent visit to the White House.

The White House released more photos of the girls on Saturday, saying during their visit, Joy and Lyida “read the President a letter about their experience”.

On the night of April 14, 2014, Boko Haram terrorists attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno.

An excerpt of the letter is below:

“Mr. President, we urge you to keep America safe and strong.

“We know that some people are trying to discourage you.

“Do not be discouraged. You are right to keep American safe and strong.

“Not only for America. But for the world.

“If America is not safe and strong, where can people like us look for hope, when there is danger?

“Finally, we urge you to keep making America prosperous.”

Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, hosted the Chibok schoolgirls during their visit, the White House said.

The Boko Haram insurgents broke into the school and kidnapped the girls, who were sitting for their final exams.

“But approximately 50 of the girls have escaped, including Joy Bishara and Lydia Pogu, who visited President Donald Trump, and his daughter, Ivanka Trump, at the White House last Tuesday.

“The girls are recent graduates of Canyonville Christian Academy in Oregon, and they were accompanied by the school President, Doug Wead.

“The President and Ivanka were both deeply moved by the girls’ visit,” the statement by the White House read.

The Chibok schoolgirls’ visit coincided with the U.S. State Department’s release of its annual Trafficking in Persons Report.

“In the wake of the report, the two Chibok schoolgirls’ visit to the White House was a reminder that the survivors of the scourge of human trafficking are heroes whose courage can inspire us all,” the White House said.

“Let us recommit ourselves to finding those still in the shadows of exploitation, and let us celebrate the heroes who continue to shine on the darkness of human trafficking.” (NAN)

BREAKING: Lagos shuts down Ahmadu Bello Way

The Lagos State Police Command has announced the shut down of Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island due to the incessant flood.

According to a statement made available to Daily Times on Saturday, The Lagos State Police said it would like to inform members of the public that the Ahmadu Bello way in Victoria Island is temporarily closed.

The statement was signed by Asp Olarinde Famous-Cole Police Public Relations Officers, Lagos state police command Ikeja, on behalf of the State’s Commissioner of Police.

It stated that “Due to the heavy down pour of rain in the state, motorist plying route like Ahmadu Bello way in Victoria Island and other areas prone to flood which has caused traffic grid lock in the state are advised to take alternative route made available by the traffic officials.

“This is because the flood in the area has caused us to temporarily block the road for safety.

“We would like the public to note that the relevant traffic and security agencies are on ground to flourish out the drains and thus secure road users in the state.”
